Sept. 26, 2007 -- Topps Meat Co. has recalled more than 331,000 pounds ofits?frozen ground beef patties because of?possible contamination withE. coli bacteria.?

According to news reports, theCDC?says that two people in New York and one in Florida have beenconfirmed to have fallen ill due to E. coli bacteria in Topps' taintedground beef, and 18 other possible cases are still underinvestigation.

E. coli bacteria can causeabdominal cramps and diarrhea (which may be bloody).Most people recover fromE. coli infection within a week and without treatment, but potentiallydeadly complications may develop in some people. The young, old, and ill areparticularly at risk.

The recall only includes certain boxes of the company's Topps, Butcher'sBest, Kohler Foods, Sand Castle Fine Meat, and Westside patties andhamburgers.
